Teraflex Swaybar Link Rebuild

So....we all beat on our heeps and, ever so often, we need to replace stuff. The metal on the Teraflex quick discos is pretty solid, so all you really need to replace over time is the bushings (or in my case, as you'll see, a couple of zerks, too). Teraflex makes this an easy $12.99 (plus shipping) task. They have a video up on their site, but if you don't have a press, I will show you how to do this with simple, common, garage tools. It is a fairly simple and inexpensive fix when these start to get worn out. It will cut down on some of the shimmy you might be experiencing and let the sway bar do its job properly.

The bushings come in a four pack.....and I have a beard.


Step 1: remove sway bar links from Jeep. You'll want to pop out the metal center of the top bushings to put in the new ones, as that will go back on your factory bolt on the top side. You may need to spray some Brakekleen to get all the muck off. Take this opportunity to really clean up your links and the center sleeves.




Use a screwdriver to turn the bushings sideways.


If they are fairly worn out, you can pop them out with just the screwdriver. If not, you may have to use some vise grips or other adjustable plyers.


Once the bushings are out, get your Brakekleen back out and really give them a good cleaning. I opted to follow that up with some Rustoleum Pro flat black to make them look nice and new again.


Now they look nice and neat.


Squirt some grease on your finger (I used your standard Mobil 1 suspension grease) and apply liberally (generously....not in a Karn-like fashion) to the bushing. Take whatever is left on your finger and rub it on the inside of the hole in the link.


Now, if you don't have a press or counter-mounted vise, go back to your vise grips or other adjustable plyers (I say adjustable because the offset of those makes it perfect to get leverage on the sway bar link and pressure on the bushing). Use another vise grip to secure the link to the table.


Use your screwdriver again, but this time to turn the bushing back to it's rightful position.


You now have a pretty new bushing in your quick disco.


Repeat for the other end. Grease up that center sleeve you took out of the old bushing and insert.


When you're done, clean off the excess grease and be proud of your work.


Replace on the Jeep and tighten everything accordingly.


Oh yeah.....and I did all this while shaving.

Haha.....the last time I did the handlebar, Kori made Dazed and Confused jokes at me until I shaved it off. Kept calling me McConaughey and saying "Hey...you got a joint? It'd be a lot cooler if you did."
