Front end clunk sounds like marbles grinding together.

Already have synergy ball joints, control arms and rod ends seem fine.

Any chance it's the wheel unit bearing. Passenger side clunkity crunch.

Is it a rotational sound. With 185k in the unit bearings I bet that's it.

How many miles on the Synergy BJ's? They don't last forever.

You are describing one of the sounds a unit bearing makes when it goes bad.

    I'm betting on unit bearing.

Thanks. All other joints seem relatively tight. It is similar to the sound when the bushings were cooked in the old control arms. There's not really much more it can be I think. Ball joints have less than 15k on them and I already put new stock upper control arms on about the same time.

There is a little play in the steering box but it's a different clunk lol.

So I'm having the same noise. I thought I'd try something. Put it in 4h and drove it and the noise went away while i was on the pedal. Took my foot off the pedal and the noise was twice as loud and the rattle was much quicker than in 2h. When in 2h it rattles when traveling 30 mph and higher. Gold Knight does this sound like yours? Can anybody chime in and give me a clue as what my issue is?

Okay it's definitely in the steering box. With the engine off rotating the intermediate shaft back and forth, there is a solid clunk in the box and I can see the casting actually move. So much so I thought the bolts must be loose. But they aren't. :o

Ordered new unit bearings, axle u joints and remanufactured steering box.

I installed the unit bearings and u joints over the weekend. Both u-joints had slight perceptible play and the left side u-joint had one dry end. Not sure if the unit bearings were bad, they feel fine rotating by hand off the jeep. I'll just consider that a 189k mile maintenance lol.

The most annoying metal clanking sound is gone and there is no more crunchy marble rolling noise.

Steering box came in Monday, plan is to install it tonight. I'll report back once it's in.

Update: before starting to remove the box I had the wife rock the shit out of the jeep. I was able to locate the biggest clunk that's still there. It's the upper joint in the extended front sway bar link on the right side. There is also a very slight play in the track bar end link at the frame side.

I'll inspect it further this week.

Don't let play in the TB go Larry...it will turn into DW and start ragging out all kinds of joints and stuff.
