    disabling the ESP

Just came up recently in conversation so I figured it would be good info to post. Keep in mind this is a pain in the ass to do, I think I got it to work on the 6th attempt.

    instructions:
1: Shift transfer case into the 4h position
2: Turn the steering wheel until it is centered and the wheels are pointed straight ahead
3: Cycle the Ignition key off to on
4: Wait approximately five seconds for the system bulb check
5: Turn and hold the steering wheel one half turn to the right(clockwise) from 12 turning to 6
6: press and hold the ESP OFF button for seven seconds(i believe a chime sounds)
7: Turn the steering wheel back center, and turn and hold an additional one half turn to the left(counter clockwise)
8: Press and hold the ESP OFF for seven seconds
9: turn the steering wheel back to center
10: Press and hold the ESP OFF button for seven seconds
11: Cycle the ignition key to off

After performing the ESP disable procedure correctly, ESP OFF will be displayed in the odometer for app. 12 seconds each time the ignition is moved to ON. Repeating the ESP disable procedure will re-enable normal ESP operations. Good luck!

If you have a scan tool, you can also do the TSB on your own.

Does the ESP icon on the dash stay on, or does it turn off too?

Pretty certain it stays on all the time. I believe if I disable it with my programmer it will also stay on.

For those that are willing to dig in and and find the ESP wire and then add a switch you can do it this way as well:

You'll need wire cutters, 14 or 16 gauge wire, a two prong switch, stuff to make wire connections(solder, crimp connectors, tape and shrink tube, whatever you are into), what ever tool you normally use to disconnect your battery.

Before you start, disconnect your battery. Don't all how to, write ups or what not start with that? Sounds good to me.

    1. Two places you can find the wire: under the dash near your right foot or under the arm rest console near the back passenger side. In both locations the wire is most likely in a bundle with other wires. You'll need to find the bundle that has a Purple with Light Blue stripe.
    2. Figure out where you want to add your switch and then look for the wire bundle at either the under dash location or the back console location. If you want to add the switch to your dash, use the wire location near your right foot. If you wanted to put it on your arm rest console you can use the wire under the console.
    3. Find the purple with light blue wire. Be careful as there is also a purple with dark blue wire. You want the PURPLE with LIGHT BLUE wire.
    4. When you have found the purple with light blue wire, cut it. You can check that you have cut the correct wire by turning on the jeep. You'll see your ABS, TC and ESP/BAS lights all come on and stay on. If you actually disconnected your battery before starting you'll need to connect it back to test this out, then disconnect it again.
    5. Now grab some wire and a switch. Figure out where you want to install your switch and then solder, crimp, or however you like to connect wires together and run them to your switch. Run one wire from each of the cut wires you just cut.
    6. Now wire your up switch and finishing by installing your switch.
    7. Your done. When you flip the switch your ESP will be disabled. To enable ESP you'll need to flip the switch back on and re-start the jeep.

couple notes...there are less wires to search through at the location under the arm rest console. The bundle behind the front console near your right foot is a bigger bundle of wires. 14 to 16 guage wire I believe is adequate. Give some thought to where you want the switch before you start digging into wires.

I've tried that turn left a half turn, turn right a have turn, grab your left ball and cough about 20 times now. All it has got me is a little work out. Still not a bad thing. I'd like to hear more about the fuse thing. Please.
Hey Dickhead, get out of the fast lane! Unless you're passing of course.

Its the j6 on my 08-abs/esp fuse. Not sure if it changes with later model years.

    Is this thing on?

    I found this;

    M37
    10 Amp Red
Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) , Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Stop Lamp Switch (STP LP SW), Fuel Pump Rly Hi Control

    Fuse Block M37.JPG

I don't like that it also includes the stop lamp switch (brake lights ??) and the fuel pump Hi control.

Quick question. Doesn't doing the hokey pokey or putting a switch in the Purple with Light Blue stripe wire ONLY disable the ESP, whereas pulling a fuse kills the ABS as well?

Ours is an O7. And ABS is highly overrated who doesn't like the sound of 37s locked up heading for a smart car.
